Fine grinding

Fine grinding is a superfinishing process performed by removing a well defined amount of stock removal from two parallel flat surfaces of components requiring extremely precise geometric accuracies and good surface finish. It is tipically the last grinding step of a mechanical production chain installed to improve and correct the geometry of parts coming from sintering, shearing, moulding or similar operations. Depending on the application, the stock removal can also be taken from just one flat surface (upon technical check).
The stock removal is gained by special super-abrasive tools, built with diamond or CBN (cubic boron nitride). The grit size, the bond and the concentration of super-abrasive are parameters determined by our experience, according to the customer’s request.
The high level of technology involved allows such machines to achieve a better quality as the conventional lapping process with the following main advantages:

- much higher production
- the cleanliness of the process: as, considering that any free abrasive slurry isn’t used, parts coming off the machine don’t need any deep washing or special solvent fluids.

It is pointed out the ability of our Fine Grinding Machines ELC series that allows to process thicknesses also lower than 1mm.
Fine grinding operation is performed by Melchiorre by the double side machines series ELC that can cover all the main industrial application which requires a high productive and quality standard.

Applications

Peculiar Applications of the fine grinding are:

- hydraulic pump components (rotors, stators, distributors, covers, palettes)
- automotive (injectors, piston rings, fuel & diesel pumps components, valve plates)
- bearings (see also type “RTB”)
- technical ceramics
- hard metal inserts, sawing blades, knives etc.
